Happy Birthday Dear Internet

Vint Cerf's baby is baby is growing and how! Google today muscles through 20 petabytes of data every single day. The 10 billion user photos shared on Facebook take up in excess of 1 petabyte of storage space. German upload giant Rapidshare, declared way back in in April 2008 that it had 240 Gbps of allowable bandwidth and 5.4 petabytes of usable disk space. Memory no doubt is getting cheaper. The cost per gigabyte of data has dropped over the last decade from $31 in April '99 to a measly $0.17 today for the new Maxtor 1.5 TB disk. Fact is, as storage becomes cheaper and internet penetration and bandwidth available the world over soars, the internet growth curve will only get steeper. Even the gurus of internet today can't tell us what the 'size of the internet'(keeping aside the ambiguity of the term) maybe.

ethernet port2009 marks the 40 birthday of the internet. Applause! Its been 40 remarkable years since its conception as Defence and Advanced Research Projects Agency or DARPA's ARPANET. What is more interesting is how the web has matured from mere telnet and gophers to e-mails and to the current day cloud of social networking sites, wikis, portals, blogs and a gazillion other types of websites I'm unfamiliar with. So much so that search engines, thought of by everyone during the founding days of Google as a ridiculous and whacky concept, have today become an absolute necessity to find your needle in this ever growing haystack. Those of us who have been up there since the 90s will know how much things have transformed, right down to the narrowest of alleys of the world wide web. What has changed among other things is the language used. The chat lingo ushered in by the onslaught of IMs and IRC aside, the language of the common man's website is becoming more liberal. Enter Web 2.0.

If you're the kind of person who thinks people ought to be more specific when they're using the term mail to refer to snail mail or if you'd come running to your keyboard to google for "fonegrs struxk siperglye" rather than simply calling up your doc or you just think all mail ids are Gmail ids until mentioned otherwise, then in all likelihood you already have an inkling of what I'm talking about. Gone are the days when websites sounded as if they had been designed to be read by bots. In the early days of the net, it was funky to sound technical and sophisticated. Maybe even adding a hint of credibility during the early days of Web 1.0 and dot-com bubble later on. Ironical as it may sound, the world wide web come a full circle and we're back to where we started from.

A little touch of warmth always help, especially on a login page. That's someplace to start.

Then there are the sign up forms that's we've all filled by the dozens. If you were to sign up on Digg, you'd be getting (much) more than what you'd ask for. After all why make signing up so cumbersome and mundane?

How can one fail to mention the nagging captcha. I've always hated captchas... All but this one.

Digg just doesn't sieze to amuse me!

Websites today don't treat you like a just-another-brick-in-the-wall-client who likes to tip toe into their office, be done with the business and just walk out the front door. Website are invariably getting more user-centric.

I can't think of a better example than Google. Their 'Official Google Blog' couldn't have been more unofficial. The Gmail team appears to enjoy discussing what's cooking in their cauldron as much as they enjoy delivering it. They tell you what the employees were doing during the holidays and share pics with you on their blog. Google shares its life and culture with you, as if you're one of them. They love to hear from you all the time on the Groups - be it your woes or your likes. Could you imagine that a decade ago? I wouldn't be surprised if Google itself was responsible for the institution of this culture. I'm all too glad that Google happened. I believe that the worst of disasters was averted the day Microsoft's attempt to merge with Google in the October of 2003 failed. If that deal had materialized, we'd probably be purchasing annual subscriptions to get organic search results and still be using a search engine that hanged every few minutes - very much unlike the Microsoft Live! that you see today.

To call it a day, my heart sings for Web 2.0! Life without it would be like watching a movie in black and white -everything is out there, but there's still something missing. Something significant that's leaving a lot of the fun out. Well you get the picture. Here is the disclaimer from Last.fm's blog to wind it all up.

iPhone(y)

What do you call a bunch of guys who spend the night of 21st August 2008 at a consumer electronics outlet trying to get their hands on a 3G 'smart' device for over INR 31,000 that does not let you so much as

  • Forward a text message
  • Single button speed dial
  • Copy-paste a line of text
  • Send an SMS to multiple recipients
  • Listen to FM Radio
  • Record video
  • Send MMS
  • Set an mp3 track as your ringtone
  • Share files over bluetooth
  • Support Java or Flash
  • Support voice dialing
  • Change your cell phone operator
  • Use it as a wireless modem (when you are shelling out by the thousands every month)
I don't care what you call them. But I call them JERKS.

For all the hype and hoopla surrounding it, the apple iPhone is nothing short of a white elephant. Over priced and over hyped, its just not what the Indian market wants. If you're gonna tell me to look at the initial sales figures that should be out in a weeks time, let me tell you. All the initial sales that it is raking in are from the media hype and the popularity of it being an Apple phone. If one were to consider the functionality keeping value for money in prespective, a Nokia 1200 would fare much much better. Its reported that over 2 lakh consumers have registered for the iPhone already. But what they don't tell you was the figures are from the registrations that began way before the prices were announced.

Imagine having to turn to i-tunes for even trivial things like a petty currency converter. Isn't that just outrageous, when there are thousands of wonderful free java applications out there? What is even worse is you cannot connect to iTunes through your iPhone. You need a mac or a PC to do that. God! Thanks to Google, iPhone now has atleast has an IM client. And in the worst case, (if were still using it for the sole reason of having spent a fortune on it) if you had to change the battery after a year, you can't just do it by yourself. Yet again, get down on your knees and ask Apple to do it for you. And if you are still convinced that you want to get one, go surrender yourself into servility. God help you.

So Ms. Swathi, in case you're thinking that you've just made an achievement of a lifetime by buying the first iPhone, well... I'm sorry. I think you're just a nitwit.

Getting ripped off has never been this easy*...

Spice up you Gtalk

Here are some little known/ unknown tricks for all you Gtalk users out there. You'd know many of them, but there are lots more that you don't too..

Text Formatting:
1) Bold: Enclosing text within asterisks (*) makes it appear in bold face.
So the next time, try *GTH !!* instead!
2) Italics: Enclosing text with underscores(_) italicizes the text.
Ergo '_Abbey sale_' would be easier to comprehend than just 'Abbey sale'!

Shortcuts:
Here is a list of really handy shortcuts.
  • Windows + ESC: Open Google Talk (if it's minimized, or in the tray)
  • ALT + ESC: Minimize the current window
  • ESC: Close the current window
  • TAB: Switch between multiple chat windows
  • CTRL + I: Same as TAB
  • SHIFT + TAB: Same as TAB but in reverse order
  • CTRL + TAB: Same as SHIFT + TAB
  • CTRL + Mousewheel up/down: Change the font-size in the typing window
  • F9: Open Gmail to send an email to your friend
  • F11: Start a call with your friend
  • F12: Stop the current call
Mozilla firefox addon:
In case you'd prefer to chat from your browser (read Firefox) itself (because you are either too lazy to login into gmail just to chat or you cant install Gtalk on your office computer) then grag the gTalk Sidebar addon. This nifty little fellow launches as a sidebar (by pressing Alt+g) in the browser window itself and lets you chat conveniently (and clandestinely). Shortcuts for the chat window tabs are the same as those of Firefox. Having Google Toolbar makes signing in that much more hassle free.

Themes:
There are a number of themes and addons available out there. Mytheme is the one that I use and really love using! It lets you change the chat window background and has got tons of really cute and adorable smileys.[Don't forget to check out all possible smileys listed in the help file]
Extended Talk is another addon worth trying. It offers a wide gamut of features as compared to Mytheme. Worth a specific mention is the (independent) control of chat and main window transparency(of course, at the cost of higher CPU usage) which dilly dalliers in office will find really handy.

Winamp 5.5 'Now Playing' hack:
In case you do use Winamp 5.5x and find that Google Talk hangs every time you set your status to 'Show current music track', then there is an easy fix. It has been reported as a bug and an easy fix has also been suggested. Just go to your winamp installation folder (C:\Program Files\Winamp\ by default) and create a file named "winamp.m3u" (For nubes: Create a new text document and rename it). Restart Gtalk and lo and behold.. You're ready to sport your current track!

If there is more you want to know from me, just drop me a comment. And in case you are hungry for more, I suggest you look up the Google Talk Fan Site.

The 3 mistakes on my keyboard

Ever wondered what the SysRq, Scroll Lk and Break keys near the top right corner are for and if they do serve any purpose at all? The simple answer is they are indeed obsolete. They however continue to remain on the keyboard because keyboard manufactures never saw the need to vacate these veteran keyboard tenants. Some of the keyboards today however have done away with them. But why are they there in the first case are you wondering? Here's why.

Sys Rq: Initially designed as a software interrupt which could bypass the OS and directly interact with the BIOS (the origins can be traced to the antique IBM 3270 machines) to facilitate multi-tasking, the interrupt was left largely unutilized by subsequent operating systems . Keyboards today don't even write anything to the keyboard buffer when this key is pressed. So it should not be long before Print Screen has the whole key all to itself!

Scroll Lk: The scroll lock was introduced in the early days of computing when the screen was limited to 25 rows of 80 character each. As you can imagine, it would have served as a modifier key (akin to Shift and Ctrl) for the arrow keys letting you either move along a line of text or scroll through screen-full of insipid text. Surprisingly however, MS Excel still supports its functionality by locking the cursor to the current cell when you use the arrow keys with the scroll lock turned on. [That should somehow make up for the lack lustre performance, huh!]. According to sources on the net the scroll lock purportedly prevents text from scrolling in command line sessions in Linux. [At least it didn't work when I tried it on the command line in Solaris]

Break: As against its other two neighbours, the break key still retains it uses, but the utility of its fellow occupant, Pause is dubious. Its origin can be traced back to the days of telegraphic communication when a constantly ON line meant the line was up and working and any break (or pause) in line acted as an interrupt notifying the operator at the receiving end of an impending transmission (or in rare cases, a break/fault in the line). While Ctrl+Break halts the execution of many a compilers like TC, Pause is just as wasted as its other two neighbours with its use limited to DOS. But hey! One cool thing is Windows+Break brings up the system properties in Windoze!

Its all about the Music

I'm an audiophile. An addict more so. I get high on music and crave if I dont get enough of it. Its almost pathalogical. As I've found out, the best way of 'taking it' is Winamp. Super simple and tonnes of usable features that deem all other players obsolete. Its the ease of use that sets it apart. If you've still not done it, try Winamp 5.5 today! The UI is plainly superb(The Big Bento skin especially), thanks to its simple yet elegant layout. The Media Library amazingly versatile and largely customisable to anybody's taste. Hats off to the Auto-Tagger courtesy Gracenote. Its simply outstanding! Throw in lyrics and album art fetchers, a few of those gay DSP plugins for visualisations and DSP(just a friggin waste of time, but entertaining all the same), global hotkeys (most players today have it) and portable device support, and Winamp is right on top. And if you have a bluetooth enabled phone, here's the icing. On the downside, Winamp is not all that good with videos, but is fairly decent with online media. Anytime better than Windows Media Player. But we all know the reason... So...
I've got some really strong reviews favouring Amarok, I'm yet to fully explore it. For the first few times that I used it, it didn't really impress me. [Well, actually neither did Winamp when I started using it as a nube!]

I've rated and organised my collections over the years. My collection(Winamp Media Library)was destroyed many times over and a few times even my hard-disk partitions were wiped out clean. Despite all that, I still manage to get somehow rebuild one from the other; to get it back to where it all was and forward again. The last time this happened was a couple of weeks back, when installing PC Linux on my comp. I lost my entire partition, for not having bothered to restart my comp after partitioning. I rebuilt my collecton back using the Media Libray, painfully. I was told that it was the time for me to change (my taste)... But then... why SHOULD I?

Anyways, here is a list of my top 500 songs. I mix of mostly Western (read English) and Hindi tracks with a few Kannada and Tamil tracks sprinkled here and there. I'm just putting this up so that in case you have an artist or band of your choice, you may want to check out the tracks listed here as well. I've tried my best to tag them all. There are a number of tracks that should have been on the list, but have not been listed. Can't really help it. A lot of it got lost during the recurring catastrophes that I've mentioned. So the only point is that - All tracks on the list are great tracks but not all great tracks are on this list. Ahoy, ye critics... time to draw out your guns!

1 message received

A messaging freak that I've become, I find it really irritating and punishing when my operator - Vodafone strips me of my precious daily resource of 100 free msgs on a few (dubiously) chosen days. What makes it even worse is that they do it without any prior notice (on the contrary, Airtel supposedly 'expresses itself' days in advance) for a number of days preceding, including and succeeding D-days like Diwali and New's Years day. Their choice of days, unfortunately, is limited no more than a pug's choice of place to micturate. Whats more, they go on to charge more than the normal rates on these days. Disgusting. Distressing. Depressing. But then, since they have offered me such an economic plan, I have no right to complain I suppose. It still feels very unfair however. Well, you can't 'eat the fish and have no bones too'.. can you?

So I hit upon this idea to use my gprs to rescue me from these traumatic message-less days. When browsing for softwares once, I had come across apps that let you send msgs over gprs at no additional cost. So it would cost me a trivial amount (just 10p since I'm charged a minimum of 10p/10kb). Theoretically, that is. And if my assumption that data rates are the same even while on roaming, my strategy would beat the pug paws down!! Thus began my quest for THE sms software. I did find a few apps here but none really worked the way I wanted them to. And it became clear that they all used more than one session to send a message. So even though total data did not amount to 10kb, the cost would be more than the min of 10p (since the min cost of a session is 10p). And more data transfer for receiving a msg. So its all straight forward math that the apps that I'd tried would just not work out.

Why am I writing all this then. The fun part is I hit upon this sms software called NexySMS 2. Its use? It lets you send/receive msgs from your comp. All you Nokia users out there must be grinning thinking, "Nokia PC Suite lets me do all that". But this app does more than that. All messages are automatically presented as conversations. So its like a true online experience, akin to chatting with your friend over shall I say, Gtalk!? The app connects to the cell via bluetooth/IR/cable. It keeps track of all the msg history and it lets you synchronize its phone book with your cell as well.

And personally, what makes it even more useful to me is the fact that my house is 'geographically handicapped'... a network black-spot in other words, due to the terrain. Only the window sill in my room has sufficient signal strength. With Nexy, I can now afford to just place my cell on some vantage point and converse with friends sitting at my laptop just about anywhere! Isn't that cool!
This is a shareware and comes with a 30 day trial period. With some toggling of the system clock of my comp though, I [unintentionally] managed to freeze its sense of time, giving me an unlimited 'trial period'!! So for now, its game on !!!

Inspiration Gtalk...

There is one thing in life that i respect more than anything else..The Human Mind. The Beautiful Mind. Its not really surprising that many of us actually fail to see the point. It takes effort, time and above all, tenacious curiosity to do it. But to those of us who have discovered it, the experience I'm sure would have been unsurpassed. This post is first of the (hopefully)series, wherein i shall pen down some insight that I have personally gained into this amazing thing called the human mind. Not some ground breaking revelations but interesting all the same.

Having spents hours at an end chatting on Gtalk, some things have become become glaringly evident. So, much so that I' m longing to devote an entire post to it. Here goes...

Hidden behind the 'screen', an online Mr.X ( sex no bar, and I'm seious!), is way different from an offline Mr.X. Its not a conscious effort to project oneself as someone he/she is not, but rather an outcome of a beautiful mind game. Online, its an alltogether different arena, a different game. When you communicate with a person, in person, the mind is at work processing a countless different things of which the owner is not even remotely aware of. But he/she reacts to it all the same. When you think that you are just talking the person, your mind is busy doing things much more than just listening to the verbal communication. There is a lot of non-verbal communication that goes on in tandem with the more evident verbal part. The mind picks up subtle information, or rather tries to infer information from the other persons body language, facial expressions, hand gestures, tone, etc. The processing and the resulting information greatly varies from individual to individual. Like for example, different people form different opinions about the same lecturer even though they all hear the same thing. The mind rewires and reorganizes itself constanly to adapt to its environs, hoping to help it better cope with circumstances that are to come. This, to me, seems to be a natural outcome of Darwins Theory of Evolution. The better I am at reading you (not just listening to you) the more I understand not just what you say, but also what you actually think. So naturally, the more we communicate. the better I get at it. Hence, during an actual face to face communication, the mind is not only busy reading signals, but is also busy sending the right signals across. In a nutshell, this seemingly innocuous talk is much more than a simple exchange of words. Mind you, the brain goes into an overdrive if you are communicating with someone of the opposite gender. There is an entire new spectrum of data processing that needs to be, whether you like it or not ...Probably one of the reasons why heroes get tongue-tied when trying to propose the heroine !?

But that is not the case when you are online. All that the brain is doing is processing a plain, flat, string of text. It means what it means. Period. It does not have to give a damn about anything else and so is at ease and does what is does best...think. The net outcome of all this that when online, I feel much more at ease expressing myself. I freely put across whatever I have to, without any fear of misjudgement or any urgency of having to be spontaneous . I am actually being more of myself.

So, the next time you are online chatting your time away, just keep this in the back of your mind. You may be a very appeasing and loved character online(or god forbid, a despicable and blunt person)....but then, life is a game played offline. Its an all together different arena, and a different mind game...
