Its finally over. I'm an engineer today. But its only bitter sweet at best. The euphoria of having completed my graduation is being shadowed by a numbing pain of having to part. From my dearest of friends, my department and my college.
Come the last few days and we all seem to be normal. Still nothing is happening. Sorry. I dont think so. It just doesn't show. Deep within we all fear the day when we'll have to leave behind a place and friends with whom/which we bonded like nothing else in life. Its the end of a tumultous 4 year journey but its only the sweet memories are left behind. That makes it even worse. Agonizing.
The night before the day before ECC exam. I'm sitting in the main building reading room. (Forget all the scornful looks that you get for being a final yr student in the reading room.) I just could not read. Memories come rushing to me... a time when I met somebody in the main lobby... some incident which was ever so insignificant now weighs so heavily on mind. Its forms a knot in my throat I cant swallow. I walk out and go for a stroll towards the college gate, along the dimly lit road. I plug into some light music to lighten things up. It just doesn't fit. I dont minding listen to some really sentimental kannada song now playing over the FM. Its soothing. Its comforting. I sit down and turn back towards the main building... Man!
I've been doing every other chore of my daily routine with a heightened sense of awareness. The last time I'll be entering ATB. The last time that I'll be writing an exam. The last time I'll be eating at NFC.. The last time... Its not all the musical for someone near me to hear that. But I dont care. I know it hardly matters
And finally the day has arrived. The ineveitable. Its almost nothing until I go to bid Amod farewell. He hugs me tightly... For just an instant longer... one fleeting moment. And it all comes tumbling down on me. I try to push him away in an attempt to fight back the up surge of emotions that I was not prepared for. He looks away. Its all too much.

Its all about the Music
I'm an audiophile. An addict more so. I get high on music and crave if I dont get enough of it. Its almost pathalogical. As I've found out, the best way of 'taking it' is Winamp. Super simple and tonnes of usable features that deem all other players obsolete. Its the ease of use that sets it apart. If you've still not done it, try Winamp 5.5 today! The UI is plainly superb(The Big Bento skin especially), thanks to its simple yet elegant layout. The Media Library amazingly versatile and largely customisable to anybody's taste. Hats off to the Auto-Tagger courtesy Gracenote. Its simply outstanding! Throw in lyrics and album art fetchers, a few of those gay DSP plugins for visualisations and DSP(just a friggin waste of time, but entertaining all the same), global hotkeys (most players today have it) and portable device support, and Winamp is right on top. And if you have a bluetooth enabled phone, here's the icing. On the downside, Winamp is not all that good with videos, but is fairly decent with online media. Anytime better than Windows Media Player. But we all know the reason... So...
I've got some really strong reviews favouring Amarok, I'm yet to fully explore it. For the first few times that I used it, it didn't really impress me. [Well, actually neither did Winamp when I started using it as a nube!]
I've rated and organised my collections over the years. My collection(Winamp Media Library)was destroyed many times over and a few times even my hard-disk partitions were wiped out clean. Despite all that, I still manage to get somehow rebuild one from the other; to get it back to where it all was and forward again. The last time this happened was a couple of weeks back, when installing PC Linux on my comp. I lost my entire partition, for not having bothered to restart my comp after partitioning. I rebuilt my collecton back using the Media Libray, painfully. I was told that it was the time for me to change (my taste)... But then... why SHOULD I?
Anyways, here is a list of my top 500 songs. I mix of mostly Western (read English) and Hindi tracks with a few Kannada and Tamil tracks sprinkled here and there. I'm just putting this up so that in case you have an artist or band of your choice, you may want to check out the tracks listed here as well. I've tried my best to tag them all. There are a number of tracks that should have been on the list, but have not been listed. Can't really help it. A lot of it got lost during the recurring catastrophes that I've mentioned. So the only point is that - All tracks on the list are great tracks but not all great tracks are on this list. Ahoy, ye critics... time to draw out your guns!

I've got some really strong reviews favouring Amarok, I'm yet to fully explore it. For the first few times that I used it, it didn't really impress me. [Well, actually neither did Winamp when I started using it as a nube!]
I've rated and organised my collections over the years. My collection(Winamp Media Library)was destroyed many times over and a few times even my hard-disk partitions were wiped out clean. Despite all that, I still manage to get somehow rebuild one from the other; to get it back to where it all was and forward again. The last time this happened was a couple of weeks back, when installing PC Linux on my comp. I lost my entire partition, for not having bothered to restart my comp after partitioning. I rebuilt my collecton back using the Media Libray, painfully. I was told that it was the time for me to change (my taste)... But then... why SHOULD I?
Anyways, here is a list of my top 500 songs. I mix of mostly Western (read English) and Hindi tracks with a few Kannada and Tamil tracks sprinkled here and there. I'm just putting this up so that in case you have an artist or band of your choice, you may want to check out the tracks listed here as well. I've tried my best to tag them all. There are a number of tracks that should have been on the list, but have not been listed. Can't really help it. A lot of it got lost during the recurring catastrophes that I've mentioned. So the only point is that - All tracks on the list are great tracks but not all great tracks are on this list. Ahoy, ye critics... time to draw out your guns!

Dear Letter,
Where art thou. I miss thy warmth.
Gone are those days of snail-mail. Make way for Gmail, Yahoo!, Zapak, yada yada. 
I still remember the days when I regularly wrote to my uncle and aunt in Mangalore as a little 10yr old, pondering over how to fill the whole of the 3 pages of the blue inland letter (which I called was 'England letter' for a long long time) that the erstwhile T&P dept was generous enough to grant. Starting with a neat little 'Aum' at the top, scrawny tiny letters filling up the letter, punctuated appropriately with a number of illustrations depecting things from my first wrist watch (that was when I was in 4th std) or the high-jump equipment that I had fashioned myself using nothing more than coconut fronds! They were all there. Unlike today, a call to Mangalore was expensive at that time and hence they were reserved for 'adult talk'(pun unintended). So my dear uncle and aunt always waited for my letter and the same was the case at my end. Over the course of years, the letters grew less and less frequent and were increasingly replaced by longer and longer calls.
Things that a letter can do, an email can never do. The effort that goes into getting an inland letter/envelope from the post office, to the amount of time spent on carefully penning down every single line, to finally licking it close... Its all been replaced by a couple of quick taps and a final click on the 'Send' button! The thrill of waiting for the postman everyday awaiting a letter, followed by the rush of carefully tearing open the letter, with the tip of the tongue barely sticking out of the mouth, all in anticipation of what was in store has been replaced by an impatient staring at a blank screen, feet and fingers tapping incessantly, saying 'loading' in white letters encased in a tiny brown rectangle at the top right corner or when you are in a real hurry, saying 'Loading... This seems to be taking longer than usual....'!! Arrgghh!! The postman was more than a man who just delivered letters, which R.K.Narayanan beautifully documents in his stories of Swami and his friends. So when the time came for me to present a part of my very first earnings to my dear uncle and aunt, I chose to do it via the good old mail. Even today, don't the occasional New Year or Diwali greeting that makes its way onto your doorstep mean much more than a flashy animated e-greeting? 
All said and done, the net is obviously capable of doing things which way beyond what ordinary post can ever do. I've rediscoverd and am now in touch with my classmates from even 2nd std and whole lot of others, which would have been impossible if not for the convenience of email(read Gmail), IM(read Gtalk) and social networking (read Orkut), given the ordeal of opting for post (Interestingly, though arguably, Speed-Post could be an oxymoron!). No matter where my cousins, ex-classmates, seniors from college are, its still the same as having them in the room across the hallway thanks to the net.
So what is the bottom line? Electronic media has let us remain in touch with an astounding number of people. With some fineprint. But relations are a bit shallower this way. Or I could say, less intense. The postal service shall continue to exist until we come up with something akin to teleporting. But handwritten letters are fast joining the list of those nostalgic childhood companions that are dying a silent death.

A messaging freak that I've become, I find it really irritating and punishing when my operator - Vodafone strips me of my precious daily resource of 100 free msgs on a few (dubiously) chosen days. What makes it even worse is that they do it without any prior notice (on the contrary, Airtel supposedly 'expresses itself' days in advance) for a number of days preceding, including and succeeding D-days like Diwali and New's Years day. Their choice of days, unfortunately, is limited no more than a pug's choice of place to micturate. Whats more, they go on to charge more than the normal rates on these days. Disgusting. Distressing. Depressing. But then, since they have offered me such an economic plan, I have no right to complain I suppose. It still feels very unfair however. Well, you can't 'eat the fish and have no bones too'.. can you?
So I hit upon this idea to use my gprs to rescue me from these traumatic message-less days. When browsing for softwares once, I had come across apps that let you send msgs over gprs at no additional cost. So it would cost me a trivial amount (just 10p since I'm charged a minimum of 10p/10kb). Theoretically, that is. And if my assumption that data rates are the same even while on roaming, my strategy would beat the pug paws down!! Thus began my quest for THE sms software. I did find a few apps here but none really worked the way I wanted them to. And it became clear that they all used more than one session to send a message. So even though total data did not amount to 10kb, the cost would be more than the min of 10p (since the min cost of a session is 10p). And more data transfer for receiving a msg. So its all straight forward math that the apps that I'd tried would just not work out.
Why am I writing all this then. The fun part is I hit upon this sms software called NexySMS 2. Its use? It lets you send/receive msgs from your comp. All you Nokia users out there must be grinning thinking, "Nokia PC Suite lets me do all that". But this app does more than that. All messages are automatically presented as conversations. So its like a true online experience, akin to chatting with your friend over shall I say, Gtalk!? The app connects to the cell via bluetooth/IR/cable. It keeps track of all the msg history and it lets you synchronize its phone book with your cell as well. 
And personally, what makes it even more useful to me is the fact that my house is 'geographically handicapped'... a network black-spot in other words, due to the terrain. Only the window sill in my room has sufficient signal strength. With Nexy, I can now afford to just place my cell on some vantage point and converse with friends sitting at my laptop just about anywhere! Isn't that cool!
This is a shareware and comes with a 30 day trial period. With some toggling of the system clock of my comp though, I [unintentionally] managed to freeze its sense of time, giving me an unlimited 'trial period'!! So for now, its game on !!!
